Founded by Mark Shuttleworth in South Africa, Thawte was the first certificate authority to issue SSL certificates to public entities outside of the United States, quickly accounting for 40% of the global SSL market. In 2000, Thawte was acquired by Symantec and has become a key member of the Symantec family of trust brands. Symantec CA has been then acquired by DigiCert.

On December 1st 2017, DigiCert took over the validation and issuance of all certificates emitted by Symantec CA and its subsidiaries (Thawte, GeoTrust. RapidSSL). As of today, Thawte is not a subsidiary of DigiCert and all its certificates will have DigiCert as their root CA.
Base domain included as SAN
When you enroll to secure a domain with a www prefix (e.g. www.mydomain.com) its base domain (mydomain.com) will be included for free! That allows to secure connections with both the www prefix and without it. That also applies to wildcard certificates: secure *.mydomain.com and mydomain.com will be included for free.
